Fresh Design - Fiber Art in the New Millennium

On Friday 7/27/12, Belinda and I along with my granddaughter, Kailee visited the FAU Second Avenue Studio in Ft. Lauderdale for the Florida Craftsmen show Fresh Design. It was beautifully staged with good lighting and pieces were clearly described. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we enjoyed the visit!

 Irene Munroe
The white pieces were nylon that had been burned/melted. The box frame on the left held a mass of the burned pieces that curled up like dipping corn chips.

Below is a landscape painted with paste paint.

 Below is "Gina's Wall"

The piece below was so intricate in construction but it somewhat mimicked the paper chains we made with chewing gum wrappers.
Below is the final piece that LeeAnna asked advice about at the last Fiber Guild meeting regarding the construction.

This piece was so heavily stitched it must have been stiff with threads.

Jackie's doodle fish ATC's

We're exploring the idea of swapping ATC's at the first meeting of all of us in the fall. (one AYE  here! anyone else?)

Gina has suggested we each independently work a project from a magazine for show and tell in the fall. (great idea!)

Collage that is ART IMHO

Here is the blog for Sandra Vandergeest who makes some of  the most beautiful collages I've seen.

Shoe & Bag Embellishing Day 6/5/12

We spent a gray day using very bright and happy colors for our shoe and bag embellishments. These pictures however, are unembellished....

Belinda and Gina get to playing.

Jackie "poses" with her perfectly prepared  tools.

feet don't fail me now...

 Gina's very Mondrian shoe forms.

Belinda's progress for the day - looks great!

Our next OT on June 26th - location TBD.  will be alphabet soup with ATCs and UFOs on the agenda.
Fun times!

Dyeing: Gina's Results ...Finally!

To use up the remaining dye I used a large foil baker as I had run out of containers for dyeing. I placed a layer of crunched fabrics in the bottom, poured the dyes over them trying to keep the colors somewhat separated. Then I layered more fabrics on top. The top layer I poked gently with a stick trying to allow some white spaces to remain. I don't think the aluminum container had any effect on the fabrics but the dye had an effect on the container. It appeared discolored on the bottom afterwards .... perhaps from the dyes or more likely the soda ash?   Thought I'd leave the feet in the photo!
Below are the two fabrics that were on top. I'm happy with the bits of white that separate the colors.

The fabrics on the bottom are darker with little or no white....

I'm not sure if the one above was in that pile or in a separate container.

Cups of tiny samples after a quick rinse, they are sitting in hot water with detergent. They sat for over a day but still need more washing. Too tiny makes for tough hand washing! They are just going into a notebook so they can run if they like ....

A few of my favorites....... beer caps tied into the fabric below....

Maybe not a favorite but a green .....

 Paperclips....
 More paper clips.....
The over-dyes ..... the lime green is actually more green than what shows in the photo.

The fabric tied onto the pvc pipe.....
 Just another blue....
Traditional tie-dye....
Folded and tied with just black dye....
